Vonage introduced the Vonage World Plan in 2009. The intent of this particular plan was to allow “unlimited” calling around the globe in addition to unlimited local and long distance services. The plan was touted widely in the media. Some claimed its existence was the answer Vonage needed to compete against Skype.
On the surface, the plan is a feasible and very viable one. It appears to offer individuals the ability to phone anytime, anywhere using the VoIP technology of Vonage. It even offered a month of free service! Vonage also says there is no need to dial an access code – as is common with other worldwide plans and no need for a calling card.
The World Plan overall promised the same quality of service and products of a regular Vonage plan. Ah, there is the rub. The quality of customer service with Vonage has been under considerable attack by reviewers and users alike. Many former users have also had issues with the quality of the product. In their opinion, Vonage does not deliver on its promise. Anyone opting for a Vonage World Plan better consider first whether the norm of service provided by the company is actually up to his or her standards of acceptability and quality.
If you are thinking about the Vonage World Plan be careful to read the literature. Look at exactly what the plan is offering. Do read the small print. You will find several items worth mulling over. They include:
- Unlimited – do not believe you can call infinite number of numbers for an infinite time. The company policy states unlimited is relative. It is based on what is described as “normal residential use”
- Not all countries fall into the World Plan. The map on their site shows areas that Vonage provides coverage for as well as sectors subject to per-minute rates. Also exempt are specific non-geographic numbers
- While Vonage can and does include all land lines in the accepted countries it may or may not include cell phones
- Vonage World, like in its other plans, does not include certain premium numbers in the package
Whether the Vonage World Plan is useful to you will depend upon what you intend. It also relies upon your own equipment. If it is faulty, no plan, Vonage or otherwise, will provide fast, efficient and high quality service. Shop around before you sign up. Once you are on the Vonage World Plan, from all indications, it is not easy or inexpensive to cancel it.
