Vontage or Vonage

Over the years, Vonage has built its brand through strong advertising in media. It has built its presence in United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. It’s also been known in other countries as Vonage is portable VoIP solution. It can be used wherever the Internet is available.

But I’m not talking about Vonage phone service today, but a phenomenon of misspelling (and misunderstanding).

Some brands are commonly misspelled, and Vontage is one of them. Ops, I meant Vonage. Some other well known misspelled brands are Cannon instead of Canon, or Nicon instead of Nikon.

Anyhow, I found that Vontage as a keyword got over 33,000 searches last month (May 2010) in U.S., and over 40,000 globally (worldwide I guess) – on Google only! What about Yahoo!, Bing, and other search engines?

Then I checked the Vonage keyword, and found that it got 823,000 searches in United States, and 1,220,000 globally – on Google. Well, that’s something, ha? Anyway, the conclusion was that Vontage was about 4% of the total searches (assuming that there are no other things associated with this word).

I’m sure that this “trivia” has the revenue potential for Vonage, and no wonder the site Vonage FAQ wrote about it as Vonage or Vontage?

With over 2.4 million subscribers, Vonage has a lot to work on, and to get even more people to go for it. It’s definite that our phone lines are going Internet way, sooner or later, just like it’s happening with the TV now. I’m kind of reluctant and like to have some redundancy. I would hate to lose all communication if my Internet is down. And that happens.
